I’ve made that argument that self-improvement advice is often only useful for people who are reasonably well-adjusted and have a baseline level of circumstances that give them a chance to succeed.

Some people do seem to be cursed and born into insanely bad situations. I have no answer for these people. They just are.

That’s why I also encourage all of us who do meet the baseline of circumstances — born in the west, somewhat educated, with some level of resources — to thank our lucky stars we have what we have and try to engineer our own luck.
